Learn to Sew: Upcycled Sheet to Sundress
A vintage-inspired upcycle
Available spots
Description
Upcycled bed sheets are a dream fabric for beginner sewists. They are affordable, abundant, and available in an endless range of prints. Thrifted sheets are also a wonderfully sustainable way to begin sewing garments and building a handmade wardrobe you’ll truly love. In this class, you’ll learn how to transform a simple bed sheet into a vintage-inspired, 1950s fit-and-flare sundress. With a fitted bodice and a beautifully full skirt, you’ll create a timeless piece that’s perfect for spring and summer days. Your instructor will guide you through every step of the process, from choosing the correct pattern size to cutting, sewing, and fitting your dress so it feels just right on your body. Along the way, you’ll learn essential garment-sewing skills including darts, understitching, gathering, installing a lapped zipper—and yes, we’ll add pockets too! Let your creativity shine through your wardrobe. Whether you choose classic florals, playful prints, or something totally unexpected, your upcycled bed sheet sundress will be a one-of-a-kind piece with a story all its own. Supply List: - At minimum: a queen or king-sized flat sheet. *The more fabric, the more volume we can add to the skirt. Twin sized flat sheets will work only if you have the matching fitted sheet or another sheet in a coordinating colour that you'd like to combine. -Lining: please bring a white or coordinating coloured pillowcase or bedsheet for lining the bodice- we want to make sure the finished garment isn't see through! -Zipper and thread: Please bring a 14"+ zipper in a similar colour to your dress fabric and matching thread. -Pre-wash: Be sure to wash and dry your fabric the same way you'd wash the finished garment. We recommend machine wash and machine dry to avoid any shrinkage later! -Pre-treatment: if you are using pre-owned sheets you MUST pre-treat them with oxy clean or other stain-removing treatment to ensure they are clean all the way across and so any yellowing from age is minimized. Often sheets are a different colour in the middle than they are on the edges, so be sure to look at them closely before buying used sheets!
