Description

Stitches & Spirit-A Ribbon Skirt Journey. Join us for a meaningful and hands-on two-day Ribbon Skirt Workshop rooted in culture, connection, and creativity. On Friday evening, Linda Chisholm, an Elder in the Métis community, will guide participants through the rich history and cultural significance of the ribbon skirt. Through traditional teachings, storytelling, and a special smudging and drumming ceremony, you will gain a deeper understanding of the skirt’s meaning, spirit, and role within Indigenous communities. This evening is about grounding, learning, and preparing your heart for the creative journey ahead. Linda Chisholm is the Aunt of Brittany Karbonik, owner of Make It Sew and the sewing instructor for this workshop. Brittany, a proud Métis woman, will lead participants through the construction of their skirts on sewing day, sharing her skills in a supportive and welcoming environment. With your new knowledge and inspiration, you’ll have time to gather your materials. Thanks to our generous collaboration with Marshall Fabrics, workshop participants will receive an exclusive 15% off coupon to purchase fabrics or a ribbon skirt kit. On Sunday, students will return for a 6-hour guided sewing session where Brittany will provide step-by-step instruction as you bring your ribbon skirt to life. Whether you are a beginner or experienced sewer, you will be supported throughout the process. To close the workshop, Linda Chisholm will hold a personal connection ceremony with each participant and their finished skirt — honoring the journey, intention, and spirit woven into every stitch. Please note: you do not need to be Métis or Indigenous to attend this workshop. We warmly welcome and appreciate the allies in our community who wish to learn respectfully and participate in this cultural experience. This workshop is more than sewing; it is about culture, ceremony, and connection. We look forward to creating alongside you.
